Most people have a friend or uncle who is pretty handy with a camera. So why not let Uncle Bob photograph your wedding? Your betrothed says, "I saw a picture he took of Pikes Peak and it's great!", "err but mountains don't move", you wisely reply.
My wife and I decided not to hire a wedding photographer when we married in 2002. My friend is a professional wedding photographer and insisted he shoot our wedding and we're so glad he did. I had no idea I would end up freelancing for him a few years later! Our wedding album sits on the shelf and we look at it most weeks The pictures on our walls we see everyday.
Our original plan was to let the guests take the pictures and we would make our own album based on them. I still think it's a great idea. You'll get lots of fun photos and moments that only a close friend can get. However they are a compliment to professional photographs and will never be a substitute for them.
Inexperience Shows in Wedding Pictures (or The Story of My First Wedding as a Photogapher!)
I was asked to shoot my friends wedding in 2003. I didn't own a fancy camera or had ever done anything like it before. I had got a few fun shots at other friends weddings and based on them, I was to be their photographer! I had a nightmare before the event that made me decide to get a digital SLR. I'm glad I did! I had a few months to learn how to use it and then shot my first wedding. I didn't ask for anything from my frends but they we still very generous to me. More than I deserved!
I visited the church many times to plan the photographs, spoke with the pastor about the rules of photography in the church and walked the route over and over until I felt prepared. A routine I still employ today. The photos turned out OK, well below what I would expect of myself now, but OK. I'm the first to admit they could be better. My friends took a gamble and it mostly paid off. I would love to have a do-over and show them the pictures I could create for them now.
Craig's List is THE place for bargains!
So how important is you photography to you? That's the first question I ask a couple when I sit with them. Back in 2003 I was hoping for the answer 'not very'. The low ball cheap priced people on Craigs List are hoping for that answer too. Now that I'm a professional photographer I hope to hear your wedding photographs are important to you. They are to me, and I still obsess about provinding the finest work possible.
Every man and his dog is now a 'wedding 'photographer'. Just check Craig's List and you'll see a bunch of ads every day. All day photography, CD and image rights for $500 dollars! What a bargain! Well no not really, a bargain is something of great quality for a great price. You might get lucky and find a talented photographer who is 'portfolio building' but most very low price photographers are just starting out. They can offer this incredibly low price because they don't have experience. They want you to pay them, while they learn. You may pay the price of ruined wedding photos. They probably have low end equipment and no insurance. Post processing takes a powerful computer and the leading software runs into the 1000's of dollars. Digital files need to be backed up to long term off site storage. They probably have no back up gear and limited options for the difficult lighting situations in most wedding ceremony venues.
All quality photographers serve an aprenticeship as an assistant with an established quality photographer. Most top professional wedding photographers will still assist for another to see if their style needs to evolve or if they can learn anything new. After my first wedding experience I found people to work with to learn the craft and develop the art of wedding photography.
You wedding photography is an investment. Everyday I see my wedding photos on the wall and I'm glad my friend was a professional wedding photographer.
Photographer, Wedding Planner and Emergency Tissue Provider!
A wedding photographer takes on many roles at a wedding ceremony, from checking up on the caterering to locating the brides boquet and other flowers. At times they must blend in and others confidentlaly stand up in front of large groups of people. If there's no wedding planner, then the photographer must organize everyone and co-ordinate the movement of the bridal party and guests with the ceremony site venue, hotel or church and the dj. I strive not to be the 'bossy photographer' and have evolved a style to get thing done with minimum fuss and no bossing.
People often talk to me about wanting to become a wedding photographer. They want to know the best way to prepare for a career in wedding photography. I've studied photography for years and still try to learn something new all the time. I'm confident in front of large groups and that's thanks to my mom. She would have me and my brother read in front of the congreagation at chuch on Sunday when I was a boy. I stay in good shape, well, I sure try! Good quality camera equipment is heavy and I have to bring my back up gear and extra stuff too. A full day of wedding photography is more exhausting then climbing a Colorado 14er!
But of all the different skills needed by a wedding photographer nothing prepared me more than my 3 years spent teaching Kindergarten (in Japan)! You get a group of excited adults together and throw in a little alcohol and you have a bunch of very tall 5 years olds.
